THE DEVIL YOU KNOW BY ELIZABETH O’ROARK (NEW RELEASE/REVIEW)

The Devil You Know by Elizabeth O’Roark is now live!

There’s a devil on my shoulder, and every Monday morning she announces herself. She’s this delicious flame in my chest, a flurry of whispered suggestions in my ear. Suggestions I ignore…because every single one of them is about Ben Tate.

Ben—Stealer of Clients, Evicter of Homeless Women, Nemesis. Sitting across from me every damn Monday with his lovely, smug smile and his too-perfect teeth, the living symbol of everything I hate.

It’s been my policy to avoid him, but when a case comes into the firm—one that could change his career and mine—I make an exception. It means weekends and evenings by his side. It means enduring his smirk and his smart mouth and never taking the bait.

Until the night Ben says «Beg»…and that devil on my shoulder decides to make a few demands of her own.

REVIEW:

This book was one of my anticipated reads from 2022. I was excitedly waiting for this book and although it was good, it didn’t lived up to my expectations.
I feel like if you like The Hating Game or The Spanish Love Deception, you’d enjoy this a lot. It has similar Tropes with the «hate» to love -which for me was more dislike to love- and the office romance, plus it’s semi slow burn (with the romance not the sexy time!) And by the end it does have a sweet outcome and a happily ever after.
Here we meet Ben and Gemma, although if we’re honest mostly Gemma because she’s the narrator of the book. We see them living their lives as two very successful lawyers and falling in… lust(?)… to be honest I didn’t felt the chemistry between them -even with some very seggsy scenes- until the last 75/80% of the book; before that they had great chemistry during intimate moments but not really romantic ones elsewhere until the very end, which is why I struggled with rooting for them for most of the book.
The banter here wasn’t as good or ruthless as book one but it had a lot of fun bits.
We got to see our previous couples too and that is always fun.
Now, the reason why I struggled with this book was our heroine. I didn’t like Gemma. Like at all. She wanted to come across as strong and decisive when in fact she was rude and very childish and immature. I didn’t like how she spoke about her coworkers (it wasn’t funny how she diminished everyone’s work and said everyone was stupid) or other women, especially the ones who dated Ben (whom she regularly refers as «dumb instamodels»). That rubbed me the wrong way. She came across as elitist and classist. She went through some things during the book that in any other case I’d felt bad for her but here i didnt care because I did not like her. That makes me sad because Tali and Drew I adored and here I couldn’t.
Also, this was the first time in a Elizabeth O’roark book that I needed the male POV because I felt I didn’t really get to know Ben and I desperately wanted to. In previous books for example Hayes personality was so «loud» in book one that it didn’t felt like it was a single pov book. I got to know him through Tali and fell in love with both characters separately and as a couple. Here, I couldn’t because Gemma was so self centered that Ben felt like an after thought.
I have a lot of friends who are going to adore this book and I totally understand why but unfortunately for me it was just okay.

Thank you to Valentine PR and the author for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
